A Mindmap-like Chat Interface Problem Statement

Overview This design project addresses the inherent ambiguities of text chat interfaces concerning which messages relate to which. Due to their linear nature, the relationship between two messages is not always obvious. A prototype of an application has been developed that allows users to structure their conversations in a mindmap or tree layout. Its use of space and color is designed to make it easier for users to follow and remember discussions. The unclear relationship between messages in linear chat environments is a widely studied problem. Because of the quasi-synchronous nature of text chat, users often talk about several things at once. The following screenshot of an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) session about the Apache webserver illustrates the confusion that can arise when many users talk at once.
